March 2007 Update
Over one year has passed since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita struck the Gulf Coast, affecting over one million people and resulting in the largest natural disaster in U.S. history. In response, Direct Relief has furnished $31.4 million in assistance to more than 100 healthcare partners throughout the Gulf Coast, comprised of $26.8 million (wholesale) in medical material aid and $4.6 million in targeted cash grants. This assistance helped people receive critical care in a time of utmost need.
Our work in the Gulf continues today. In March, Direct Relief provided $75,000 to fund the employment of a nurse midwife to oversee maternal and child health services at two key health centers in the New Orleans area.
